Review: Man Fast by Natasha Scripture
ABOUT MAN FAST:
Shaken by the loss of her father, drained by her job at the United Nations, and conflicted over failed relationships, Natasha Scripture asked herself the question at the heart of her anxiety: What is my purpose? The answer was not about finding love; it was about recognizing its source. The result is Man Fast, a true and intimate spiritual detective story.
With courage, honesty, and wit, Natasha shares the story of her awakening. Starting with the decision to fast from dating, she embarks on a journey that takes her from New York to an ashram in southern India to toiling in a vineyard on Mount Etna to a solo safari in southern Tanzania. In stepping away from the modern demand to couple up, Natasha finally finds a reflective space where she can be fully aware: of her grief, of her identity, and of love as a mystical, ever-present force.
An antidote to a culture that prizes finding the right man, Man Fast is an emotionally charged journey that leaves us with a greater understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
REVIEW:
Would you go on a Man Fast? Natasha Scripture did. And while her book is titled Man Fast, this book is so much more than just that of a girl who takes a break from dating. It’s a story of self-discovery and realizing the importance of loving yourself, and finding answers in unexpected places and people. I rarely read memoirs, but this one truly resonated with me and I highly recommend it to anyone who has wondered about the direction of their life.
“If I wasn’t going to take care of myself, who would? If I ended up alone, a fear the shadow reader had forced me to face, then where would that leave me? It wold leave me with me. Basically, that relationship―the one with myself, the one anyone has with themselves―has to come before anything else.”
Natasha’s decision to abstain from dating after the loss of her father, takes her on a journey, both physical and spiritual. She has immense success in her career and life, but society still manages to deem her “incomplete” because she is almost 40 and is unmarried and doesn’t have children. Man Fast also tackles the classic question I think every female asks themselves when they’re in their 20’s and/or 30’s or even older, “What is my purpose?”. Natasha’s journey to answer this question (among others) takes her all over the world, where she meets many different people, and learns from a variety of cultures and religions.
Natasha’s memoir is inspiring, compelling and very real. I wholeheartedly believe many women will relate to her story and will feel compelled to search for answers within themselves and through the world around us, rather than in other people. As someone who loves to travel, I found myself relating to Natasha and wanting to experience her journey in order to learn more about the world and myself. In a culture where women are told to find the right man, Man Fast emphasizes the importance of finding the right version of yourself.
